Recommended First Steps

Once you have your Aventurin{e} 6109R up and running and have finished the web based setup we recommend to perform the following steps.

Secure the GUI interface with a real SSL certificate

The web server "admserv" that runs the Aventurin{e} GUI interface does have a self signed SSL certificate installed. We recommend to replace that with a "real" SSL certificate. You can either do a certificate request and generate a CSR in order to obtain an SSL certificate at the registrar of your choice. Or you can import an SSL certificate you already have. Or (the easiest and cheapest way!) use Let's Encrypt to let the GUI request and install an LE-cert for you.

Let's Encrypt Certificate Management

This GUI page allows you to request a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate and also handles the automatic renewal of certificates.

Switch the GUI interface to HTTPS only

On this GUI page you can configure under which protocols the GUI interface is reachable. By default it uses "HTTP and HTTPS", but we recommend to switch it to "HTTPS only" as shown in the above image.

Configure the NTP Server

Accurate time keeping is important for VPS's. Please be sure to configure usage of an NTP server.

Lock down OpenSSH access

This GUI page allows you to configure the OpenSSH server. A good security precaution would be to disable "Password Authentication" and only use key based logins. The GUI allows you to generate SSH keys and PEM certificates and handle their exchange, as you can see in the next image.

SSH keys

This GUI page allows you to generate public/private keys and PEM certificates and you can also upload and download keys for exchanging them between client/server or other servers.

That concludes the recommended first steps. Perhaps you might want to take a look at the VPS management? We'll guide you through it.
